Reformer Pilates

What is it?

Reformer Pilates is a physical fitness programme for the whole body.  It aims to improve flexibility and joint mobility while at the same time improving your core strength and agility.

Strength, balance and flexibility

Learn to move through a greater range of motion more comfortably. Strengthen your muscular system as you work on flexibility and muscle control through functional movement and develop better postural awareness.

Injury prevention and rehab

Poor posture and a lack of balanced muscular support can contribute to injury. Reformer Pilates can help build resilience. It is also a safe, supervised and can be graded to suit your needs.

Hypermobility and imbalance

Many people have lots of flexibility, yet without good muscular control and fatigue resistance or endurance, they can be prone to certain injuries. Imbalance means that you may have some muscles pulling harder than others. “Balancing” muscular forces around hypermobile joints reduces the chances of injury from excess movement. Reformer Pilates works on improving muscular control and muscular balance and endurance.

Pregnant?

Small group reformer Pilates is great for expecting mums and new mums. Although demanding at times, the exercises within the classes can be performed safely while pregnant. Core and pelvic floor muscle control is an important area to work on before, during, and after pregnancy. These areas are significant for all of us and are a critical part of class regime.

Athletic performance

Although MGS reformer Pilates is for everyone, many elite sportspeople utilise Pilates for enhancing sporting performance. An improved ability to move further, faster, and with better control, means better agility and less risk of injury. Most of us are far from elite; however, we enjoy the same benefits for the things we do.

Small group Reformer Pilates is personalised approach to improving your body’s physical performance. The small groups allow us to carefully control the degree of difficulty appropriate for you.

Small Groups

Our classes consist of no more than 5 participants.  The small number of class participants allows our instructors to monitor everyone closely. Close attention to exercise performance is vital for ensuring safe and appropriately challenging progression of activities.  It allows you to work at the optimal level for you and this leads to faster results.

Physio Led Exercise

Physio led group exercise is different to Reformer Pilates.  MGS Physiotherapy has been running small group physio led classes for many years.  These classes are designed for taking people from an injury recovery stage to a point where a return to non-rehab activity is possible.  They contain only 3 or 4 people and exercises within these classes are specific to the individual and their recovery stage.  These programmes are constantly changed and re-evaluated by our physios as people improve and recover.  Participants will often be doing quite different things within the small group. Our Physios are skilled at setting correct and careful progression for various individuals and their conditions.  In the physio led groups you are following your own specific plan for your own circumstance while you all share the attention and care of the physio for the duration of the class.

MGS Reformer Pilates

Within reformer Pilates classes, all members of the group will work on the same apparatus and do similar activities; however, the instructor will be able to set and guide the degree of difficulty appropriate for you.  Our instructors are extremely skilled at ensuring good technical form and therefore aim to achieve optimal outcome from your exercise. They guide and instruct quality movement.

Simply put, reformer Pilates is for prevention and improvement while physio led classes are for recovery.

What will the Class be like?

You will learn about postural control, movement control and functional alignment.  You will perform exercises on the reformer beds just like the ones in our pictures on this page.  There will be breathing exercises incorporated into movements and you will learn what muscle patterning is.  Classes have a happy, friendly vibe, and you should finish feeling great. After a few weeks you will notice increased energy levels, gradual but profound strength improvement, better coordination, balance, flexibility and resistance to injury.

Wear exercise clothing so that you can move freely and comfortably.

New patients might ask us…

Can I book over the phone?

Yes! You can call find the clinic phone numbers at the very top of the page on a desktop, or in the side menu on a mobile.

You will find our Receptionists very friendly and helpful. They will find a time that suits you and make sure you know where to park, how to get there and where we are.

Do I need a doctor to refer me to you first?

You do not need a referral from a doctor to see a physiotherapist however if you do have one please bring it along. We like to communicate with your doctor and any other practitioners involved in your care.

Will you remind me that I have an appointment with you?

Yes! You will have your appointment confirmed a day or so before by text, email or telephone call – whichever you prefer.

How long will my appointment be?

Appointments are scheduled a minimum of 30 minutes apart. We find that in the majority of cases that this is the most appropriate amount of time. In more complex conditions or for multiple injuries longer appointments can be arranged.

Do I need to bring anything with me?

Yes please! Any investigations or scans relating to the condition will help us understand your presentation better. Even if you just have the reports from scans they will be very helpful. Likewise any notes from other Therapists or doctors would be great. If you don’t have anything then don’t worry just bring yourself.

If you have problems related to walking or sport then please bring your runners or boots in for use to look at.

If you have a WorkCover claim or were injured at work then please bring your claim number. If you do not have a claim number but intend to get one please advise our receptionist when you arrive.

I'm running late!

Our aim is that everyone receives the attention they require and while achieving this we attempt to utilise all of our available time.  If you are running late please call ahead and our Receptionist will check with your physio to see if it is possible to still see you.  There may not be enough time to attend to your needs effectively.  If we rush you through your treatment it is at best not helpful to you and at worst unsafe.  We can simply reschedule your appointment for a later time.
